Shipbreakers

Ships sold for demolition are driven from the sea directly onto the beach before workers armed with blow torches take the vessels apart. The hulls are cut into metal plates for projects such as houses, roads and bridges, or used as raw material by steel mills. In Bangladesh where half the population still earns less than USD $2.00 per day, most of the unskilled workers are confined to menial jobs such as farming, shipbreaking and construction.
