I was in Guangzhou yesterday and I was shocked by all the large fins on show, some freshly cut whale sharks still with the white spots, tail fins at least four and some other very large fins that could of been white or basking sharks.
Men hold up whale shark fins at a sea food wholesale market in Gunagzhou, Guangdong Province, 28 January 2010. Whale sharks are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list and are at high risk of extinction in the wild if fishing pratices don't change. Whale sharks are also listed on the Convention of International Trade in endangered species (CITES) Apendix 11, which means that whale shark products can only be sold with special permits. The fins were selling for 6,000 Chinese RMB per kilo. "Say No to Shark Fin Soup" http://www.paulhiltonphotography.com/index.php/gallery/album/11/4. PAUL HILTON: SHARK PHOTOGRAPHER
