Paul Hilton, 2012 World Press Photo Award Winner

I recently won a World Press Photo award; the most prestigious prize in international photojournalism.

My photo essay 'Shark Fin' was selected from more than 100,000 entries submitted by over 5,200 photographers. I am honoured to receive this award, and I hope it will alert others to the threat of extinction facing the global shark population. My aim is to show that we, as consumers, truly can make a difference with the daily choices we make. It is in our power to save this remarkable species.

My images will be part of a travelling exhibition which will be displayed in many cities across the world. More information is available here.

Feature Story

Feature Story: Blue Whales, Sri Lanka

Blue Whales, Sri Lanka

After days of watching blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda), dive in the distance, our moment arrives. We kill the boat engine and just sit quietly drifting 7 kilometers of the coast. We get a visual on a blue whale about 200 meters in front heading away from us. It surfaces with a huge blow, then as if it is meant to be, it turns towards us. Everyone onboard remains completely silent. I start to gear up, slipping on my fins, mask and grab my camera, check my f-stop and slip over the side as quietly as possible into the blue.
